Wexford is a favourite county to visit and access from Dublin is now very quick and easy. Heading to the west of the county, the M9 brought me from the N7 in just over an hour straight into the pretty town of Bunclody.  Situated at the foot of the Blackstairs Mountains and bordered by the majestic River Slaney, this historic town hosts a great range of amenities and attractions and I was interested in experiencing the Millrace Hotel situated in the town centre.

The Millrace could be described as a Boutique Hotel with sixty bedrooms, first rate facilities, friendly staff and plenty of personality. On a recent visit I was very pleasantly impressed on several fronts, it is certainly popular for weddings, great for families, ideal for golfers and I particularly enjoyed the luxe spa treatments and the delicious Afternoon Tea!

ACCOMMODATION AT THE MILLRACE

First impressions were certainly positive, with lots of free parking space available on site, and a particularly warm and friendly welcome on arrival.  Following check-in, I took the elevator to the third floor where I settled into the majestic Millrace Suite.  While there are 60 bedrooms at this hotel, there are three suites which are perfect for weddings and for special occasions. With fresh flowers and bottles of water, robes and slippers, this was a warm suite with extra heaters and windows that opened so that you could control the temperature of the rooms.  A spacious bedroom and adjacent lounge both with panoramic views over the river and woodland, this was larger than many a city apartment I have been in, and more comfortable than many a hotel room.

I loved the bathroom which had a jacuzzi bath and separate power-shower, two wash-hand-basins, extra towels and plenty of mirrors with good lighting.

DANU SPA AT THE MILLRACE

The Spa is situated on the second floor, so the great thing about being on the third floor is that it is just a few stairs, or a quick ride in the lift to reach it.  Equally it would be the same from the first floor, and indeed on the second floor it is beside you!  There is no need to go through the reception area or to walk a long corridor walks to reach the spa, which means you can go from your room in your robe and back again.  This is one thing that makes it a proper stand-alone Spa, and not just beauty rooms attached to a Leisure Centre.  The Leisure Centre is a totally different entity and is located on the first floor.

Danu Spa really is a cocoon of pampering, with Elemis products and a great range of professional and therapeutic treatments. These include Hydrotherapy, Rasul, Detox Wraps and Beauty Treatments like Tanning and Waxing.  I had a full body massage as I do spend a lot of time in the car where your back and shoulders can get very stiff.  This delightful massage was followed by time spent on a heated lounger in the relaxation room where magazines, fruit and drinks, and scenic views added to the chilled out feeling that follows a good massage.

DINING AT MILRACE

We had dinner at The Millrace Bar which is a Bistro style restaurant with a straightforward two page menu which includes set-menu dishes and A La Carte options. With a table by the window we had a really pleasant meal and were impressed to see quite a number of local people eating there on a quiet Sunday night.  Menu choices are good, portions are generous and service is friendly.  Caesar Salad, Warm Goats Cheese, Pan Fried Hake and Lamb Shank made up our choices followed by a delicious Irish farmhouse Cheeseboard with a couple of glasses of Argentinian Malbec.

Breakfast the next morning was good, with hot food cooked to order and an extensive cold buffet of fruit, pastries, cold meats and cheeses. But it was the Afternoon Tea that we enjoyed before leaving that really "took the biscuit".   Beautifully presented, deliciously decadent with each morsel so tempting, it was superior to any afternoon tea I have experienced in top hotels all over the country. If you want a lovely afternoon catch up with friends, an hour or two spent enjoying Afternoon Tea at The Millrace could not be bettered!

There is a lot to like about this hotel, and with golfing packages, Spa deals and Family Breaks all proving popular, along with weddings and conferences, it seems that Millrace is keeping a lot of people happy.  Very easy to get to and lots to do in and around Bunclody town and environs, this hotel comes highly recommended by Hotel Reviews Ireland for 2015
