ACCOMMODATION AT D4 BERKELEY

There are 184 rooms on seven floors including Doubles, Twin Rooms, Junior Suites and full Suites.  We stayed in a Junior suite which had all the luxury and space we wanted.  I do like the way all the rooms at this hotel have a seperate dressing room area with storage space, iron, extra pillows and blankets etc.  The room was very spacious with classic furnishings, working desk area, comfortable seating area, excellent bed and linen and attractive lighting.  We had tea and coffee making facilities, large windows that opened and air conditioning and heating that we could control ourselves. The bathroom had good shower pressure, bath and lighting and quality toiletries. We had a very comfortable stay there, it was the kind of room that you could comfortably stay in for a week while enjoying all the local amenities.

DINING AT THE BERKELEY BRASSERIE

The new Berkeley Brasserie has a great setting in the bright and tastefully appointed dining room.  When we arrived for dinner we were seated in one of the small booths that are situated around two sides of the room with glass windows looking out to the gardens on one side, and the kitchen area on the other. The menus are quite cleverly crafted with good choice and excellent value available. There is a set Dinner Menu offering two courses for €21 and three for €25, including tea or coffee.  Starter choices included soup, Plaice Goujons, Goats Cheese Salad and Black Pudding, with mains including Organic Salmon, Chicken Breast, Mushroom Risotto, Rib Eye steak and Lamb Bruschetta.  There are also three deserts.  The A La Carte menu has more choices including French Onion Soup, Organic Irish Pork, Fillet Steak and cheeseboard and creme brulee.  The highlights of our dinner were the Lamb Bruschetta which is a house speciality, the meat was perfectly pink and tender and the vegetable bruschetta provided a perfect foil for the roast meat.  The other favourite for me was the cheeseboard, which included particularly delicious home-made biscuits.
The wine list is keenly priced with most bottles within the €20 - €30 bracket, although you could splash out with a Burgundy at €62 or a Chateauneuf du Pape at €55.  If in celebratory mood you could enjoy a bottle of Tattinger Champagne at €99.  We opted for a more modest New World Pinot Noir from New Zealand and this balanced well with our Organic Salmon and Lamb.  There are also a good number of wines by the glass, so the list is pretty well balanced.
The Berkeley Brasserie is also the setting for a buffet breakfast.  A coffee and fresh pastry station is set up in the lobby area from 11 in the morning, which is very convenient for business people who want a coffee and croissant on the go - in fact my friend availed of this before catching the DART just down the road to get into town for 7.30  Clever and convenient.

THE PEMBROKE LOUNGE

In keeping with its determination to provide every convenience for its guests, D4 Berkeley Hotel has just opened a stylish Pembrook Business Lounge for guests who want a private breakfast, a business meeting or time to work on-line in a quiet environment.  If I were to be in town on business regularly, this would be a great facility.  It reminds me of the Business Lounges at Airports -  these are things that make travel and work so much more pleasant.
Good thinking D4 Berkeley - we like the direction this hotel is going. We will be back.
