ACCOMMODATION AT RATHSALLAGH HOUSERathsallagh was converted from a Queen Anne stable block and offers accommodation with exceptional character and charm. Our beautiful bedroom was in the new block which is built behind the main courtyard. We had plenty of space, a huge bathroom with walk in shower, separate bath, stylish bathroom ware and under-floor heating. Free broadband, king size super-comfortable bed, fresh flowers and views over the gardens. There is an old-world elegance in the sensitively designed new block and the whole complex bends together in beautifully ramshackle fashion. Little touches like wild flowers from the gardens and family photographs add to the feeling of staying with friends in the country. We woke to the sounds of the cocks crowing and the sight of horses having a morning sprint across the field. A walk around the grounds and the lovely walled garden set us up for the multi-award winning breakfast.DINING AT RATHSALLAGHThe restaurant is renowned throughout the country as delivering fantastically tasty and totally unpretentious food which is always in season, usually organic and often from the immediate area. We had beef from local Doyle’s butchers which was up there with the best, whole black sole on the bone which was enough to feed a family of four yet far too good to leave anything but the bone, and scallops that melted in the mouth. The arrival of the cheese trolley was a dramatic ending to a sumptuous meal. All too often nowadays the cheese will come plated up with no choice and sometimes less than fresh offerings. At Rathsallagh the choice is vast, the quality is excellent and the portions are very generous. Home-made biscuits, crackers, grapes and fig cake are all kindly offered, and you have to forget the previous courses if you are to do it any justice! It is no surprise that the restaurant here has won numerous awards and the breakfast is recognised as certainly one of the best in the country. Fresh ham on the bone; local sausages and bacon, free-range eggs any way you desire, fresh juices, home made breads and pastries and so many other choices that we once again ate like kings.A big bunch of Sunday newspapers are brought in by the family for guests to enjoy while enjoying a long leisurely breakfast. THE BEAUTY ROOMS AT RATHSALLAGHWhile not opting for a full spa, Rathsallagh House has incorporated a couple of treatment rooms in the new wing and offer an extensive range of treatments. I opted for an eye and neck collagen treatment and therapist Anne Kealty was so soothing and gentle that I almost dozed off! She offered some very sound advise for keeping the effects of light nights and red wine at bay, and I felt so relaxed afterwards that it was one of the most un-winding facial treatments I have ever enjoyed.Rathsallagh House is undoubtedly one of Ireland’s premier family-run country houses and offers unparalleled standards of service.
