MY THAI RESTAURANT,

THE BEACON HOTEL ,

SANDYFORD ,

DUBLIN 18.

Beacon Hotel , Sandyford review

When is a hotel restaurant not just a hotel restaurant?  When it has its own identity and qualifies as a stand-alone restaurant in its own right.  This is not something we come across very often, although it is true that the quality of our hotel restaurants ranges from relatively bog-standard to quite outstanding.

Most hotel restaurants are absorbed into the hotel’s identity, and quite often they do not even have a proper name, known only as “the restaurant”.  It is really refreshing then to find something  quite different  within a hotel that offers an authentic culinary experience to the guest.

And so to My Thai – an extraordinarily good ethnic  restaurant  that offers a very wide range of choice to suit every taste.  I have eaten there twice and brought a different guest with me each time.  While both have very individual preferences when it comes to dining out, both agreed with me that My Thai more than satisfied their tastes.  There are 13 starters to choose from, and every dish indicates if it is suitable for vegetarians and also the level of spiciness.  There then follows a choice of 5 soups and a staggering 27 choices of main course.  These include Meat and Poultry, Seafood, Curry, Noodle and Vegetarian dishes.   If you still have room  for dessert, there are 7 classic ones to choose from, although I must admit I have always filled up on the previous courses and had no room for dessert.

On my last visit I started with Tod Man – a tasty Thai fish cake, while my friend had the spicy Chicken Wings – Peek Kai Tod.  I followed with some light and delicious Prawn Tempura while my conservative friend opted for a Stir Fried Sirloin with a Garlic and Soy sauce.  I had previously  tasted some gorgeous Stir Fried Tiger Prawns and a really authentic Crispy Thai Beef Salad.  The soups are very good, and I did taste the Japanese Miso Soup, which was the real deal.

Something really interesting that you don’t find in many Irish restaurants is the “Steamboat”.  This is ideal for the healthy option as it consists of a homemade broth with vegetables and fish/meat/noodles etc.  The My Thai Steamboat comes to your table with your chosen broth in a traditional Burner and you then add your chosen ingredients into the broth.  Everybody who enjoys Eastern food  knows that a good broth is really aromatic and the base of a great dish.

Finally, another great reason for going to My Thai for dinner is for the opportunity to enjoy a great cocktail in The Crystal Bar to whet the appetite.  From Mohitos to a Singapore Sling, Caiprihnia to Mai Tai – Crystal Bar serve some of the best cocktails in town.
