DINNER AT THE MILLS INN

Now when it comes to the food, this is where the Mills Inn really stands out. We had visited on a few occasions, and always found the food to be first-class. Over the last couple of years it has become better and better, and this modest little hotel now offers food that is far more worthy of a restaurant recommendation than many of our top hotels. A separate dining room lifts the restaurant out of the bar, but interestingly the same menu and same prices apply.
An abundance of seafood choices, steaks, duck, lamb and vegetarian options – Head Chef Kevin Purcell has crafted a very intelligent and enticing menu offering something for everybody’s taste. I had a Brochette of Monkfish, Salmon and Tiger Prawns on a bed of wild rice. The fish was succulent and the wholegrain cream sauce was delicious. Other choices were oven baked Organic Salmon; Fresh Hake; a choice of hand-cut 100% Irish Angus Beef Steaks, Surf & Turf, honey roasted Duck, Lamb Cutlets and much more. There are vegetarian options, a dozen starters and as many dessert choices. Added to that is an excellent “Meal in a Hurry” menu which offers Scampi, Stir fry, Fish and Chips, Lasagne Morney, Tortellini, seafood and cold meat platters. There are always fresh daily specials to add to the basic menu. It is not surprising that this is a favourite pit-stop for travelling gourmands!
With a clever wine list and the best brown bread ever, we had an excellent dinner.

MUSIC AT THE MILLS

The great thing about The Mills Inn is that whether you visit on a quieter evening or when the place is buzzing, you are guaranteed a friendly welcome, superb food, very comfortable accommodation and if you are lucky you might stumble across one of the finest traditional music sessions you will ever find. The area around Ballyvourney is rich in Irish language and music and this is as authentically traditional as it gets.
The Mills Inn is at the heart of a vibrant local community, and it provides sustenance and shelter to all who pass through its doors, wherever they come from. The standard is high, the welcome is genuine and the ambiance is very special. We have always had a great visit there.
