  • Uniquely historic location
  • Bright and contemporary design
  • Superb service.

With the sun setting by the historic ruins of Trim Castle, the feeling inside Trim Castle Hotel was mellow. Our welcome was warm and friendly, our room was directly across the street from the old castle; we had internet access, writing bureau, flat screen TV, power shower, luxury duvet and linen – in fact we had all that we could have wanted. And our car enjoyed complementary safe parking for the duration of our stay. The scene was set for a really enjoyable visit.

While it is quite a new hotel, the setting in such historically awesome surroundings amid the Boyne Valley singles Trim Castle Hotel out as something special from the start. We felt the spirit of past cultures – High Kings and scholarly monks, Vikings and Normans, castles and crosses. It was like our childhood history lessons were coming alive in this special place! With a lovely church just to the side of the hotel, I was not at all surprised to learn that it is an exceptionally popular wedding venue. In fact, I believe that they have bookings for the next few years already!

However weddings were not on our minds on this occasion, neither were business or conference meetings, yet we could see that Trim Castle had these well covered with state-of-the-art facilities throughout.
Instead we relaxed in our lovely room and if there was anything we wanted we just called down and it was delivered with a smile straight away. Something about the service at Trim Castle, it was so pleasant and helpful, we felt very well looked after.

There are a number of dining options, including Jules Restaurant, the more bistro-style Barista Café and also a Carvery menu at Bailey’s Bar. We opted for Barista where an interesting menu of options including Fajitas, lamb shank, steaks and fish were all on offer and the service again was friendly and attentive. We opted for a vegetarian fajita, and a lovely Asian salmon dish with noodles. Very tasty food. Salad starters were lovely and light with good sweet dressings, and desserts were real comfort food! Portions were very generous and service was excellent.

We noted that they offer a very good Early Bird menu, with two courses only €17.50, and imagine that this is proving very popular locally. In a growing town like Trim, it is great to see good dining options available to the local residents. I imagine many of them face to commute to Dublin each day, so nothing could be nicer than to relax in the evening and weekends with a chic contemporary hotel with restaurant options in the centre of town.

Next morning we had breakfast in a special room designed for the purpose, adjacent to Jules Restaurant. It is so good to have separate dining and breakfast rooms, and this avoids the dreadful sight of waiting staff setting the tables for breakfast as you are enjoying your dinner!

All too soon we had to leave, it was a bright day and as we approached our car we noted we had a flat tyre! Back to reception where they called somebody to help us change the wheel. Along came delightful Lucas who struggled with a smile, and eventually managed to change our wheel for us. We could never have managed without him, as it proved a particularly difficult operation with extra jacks being called for the job.

And so back to that great service at Trim Castle Hotel. As proved yet again when we were leaving, the staff just cannot do enough for you at this very pleasant hotel, and they do it with such a friendly attitude. There are many hotels around the country that could learn a thing or two about hospitality from Trim Castle Hotel.
What’s to do in the Area?[

The town of Trim is situated 45 minutes from Dublin and is close to some of Ireland’s most impressive and historical monuments including Bru na Boinne; Hill of Tara and Slane Castle.

On the Hill of Slane, St Patrick ceremoniously ignited the flame of Christianity in Ireland. On the banks of the Boyne, William of Orange and James 11 met in the famous Battle of the Boyne.

Trim Castle is the largest Anglo-Norman castle in Europe and scene of the Oscar winning, Mel Gibson “Braveheart” movie.

In Medieval times, Trim Castle stood like an imposing stone sentinel and powerful symbol of Norman strength at the edge of the Pale, the small area of Angle-Norman influence on Ireland’s eastern coast. To go beyond the Pale was to enter the hostile world of the Gaelic Irish! Here at the edge, the two sides would have met – in conflict and in battle.

Trim is a veritable playground for visitors with activities such as golf, horse riding, hot air ballooning, fishing, open farms, gardens and many other activities are available closeby. More information from www.meathtourism.ie
