  • Stunning Location
  • Really family-friendly
  • Exceptionally good restaurant

This is a hotel where the kids, grannies, in-laws and in-loves will all be very happy. Ferrycarrig , set on the banks of the River Slaney, is one of Ireland’s best loved hotels for families, romantics, conferences, weddings and seniors. They offer great deals and superb service and facilities.

We stayed there recently and enjoyed a large and spacious bedroom with a balcony and fabulous riverside view. In fact we learned that all bedrooms enjoy this river front location, which is excellent news if booking when the hotel is pretty full as it guarantees you will still enjoy that fabulous view. The dining room is also located on the river, which makes dinners particularly romantic, and breakfasts dreamy and relaxed! And then there is the superb leisure centre, also located with stunning river-side views!

Reeds Restaurant certainly impressed us on the busy weekend night that we stayed. Although the place was buzzing, with a private party in a separate room and all tables seemed to be full in Reeds, we still enjoyed excellent food and spot-on service. The one feature I loved about the menus was the description and use of local suppliers. From the salad leaves, to the beef, cheese, fish and desserts – the provenance of the foods was listed. Not only did we have Irish farmhouse cheeses, we had – “Four locally made really great Cheeses – St Killians Camembert, 2 Year Old Wexford Vintage Cheddar, Wicklow Blue Brie & Mine Gaghar Goat Cheese” – now if only all restaurants would follow suit with their menus!

My Carpaccio of seared fillet of Irish beef was so good I savoured it silently! By the time I was enjoying the seabass with caramelised fennel, red onion and tomato Tart Tatin, I was waxing lyrical about the sensitivity of this kitchen. With wild Wexford Mallard, Killurin Lamb, Wild Boar, Edenderry Pork steak and plenty more fish, poultry and vegetarian choices, this was a beautifully constructed menu.

Incidentally, there was plenty of imagination in the breakfast menus too, where instead of having the usual “Full Irish”, we opted for lightly grilled Plaice, and Cinnamon toast with stewed fruits respectively. They made a wonderful change, and the fruits, pastries and cold cuts were all fresh and lovely. Again the dining room was full and service was perfectly timed to ensure a leisurely Sunday morning breakfast complete with complementary newspapers.
We did enjoy the leisure centre, and swam both before dinner and the next morning before breakfast. There is a well-equipped gym which we spent as short a time in as our consciences would allow. Plenty of opportunity for taking in exercise with wonderful walks all around as the hotel is situated just outside the town of Wexford to allow for plenty of scenery.

We liked the friendliness of the staff here too, this feels like a hotel that has built up a strong staff team and a loyal clientele. We will certainly return.
