  • Award winning Oceo Spa.
  • Stunning contemporary design and woodland setting.
  • Great golf at cliff top seaside course.

The unspoilt beaches of north county Wexford have for years been a favourite with families like ours from Dublin, and Gorey has never been as accessible as it is now with the road network bringing visitors from the capital in just one hour. Yet the peaceful location of Seafield Spa & Golf Hotel, down winding country roads and surrounded by acres of mature and manicured woodland, is a million miles from the crowds. What impressed me initially was the unique blend of accessibility and hide-away that was certain to make this classy hotel a winner.
I discovered a lot more to like during my visit recently; the snazzy Italian architecture and contemporary interior design that brought the outside in, and took full advantage of the beautiful surrounding countryside. There were many design details that caught the eye but there was also a feeling of space and comfort – plenty of soft seating, space and gentle lighting – that made settling in very easy.

ACCOMMODATION AT SEAFIELD

Free parking outside the hotel, quick and easy check-in, and I was in my room pretty effortlessly. We had twin beds, as requested, and these proved to be exceptionally comfortable. A big sliding glass door brought us to our private balcony which overlooked the fairways and mature trees and as it was a rare sunny day, it was a real treat to sit out and listen to the birds singing in the trees. We had plenty of sitting and working space, robes and slippers, large bathroom with separate bath and shower and great toiletries. It was a lovely bedroom and the balcony really made it for me as my friend arrived and we enjoyed drinks sitting in the sunshine and catching up on our news.

OCEO SPA AT SEAFIELD

Of the many spa facilities in hotels all over the country, there are some that particularly stand out. Oceo Spa is certainly one of these. With fourteen treatment rooms, a sixteen metre hydrotherapy pool and full thermal suite including an outdoor vitality pool, it certainly impressed us. It is also home to a gym, a nail bar and a relaxation room and the space and soothing lighting is enhanced by the many lighting candles around the facility. I was also delighted to discover some new treatments and product ranges, including the Payot range from France which is exclusive to Oceo Spa. We had a Discovery Facial, which is more like a facial massage using the delicious Payot nourishing products; and we also experienced an Ultimate Tension Release which is a 45 minute stress-buster for the back, shoulders and head. Both treatments were new to us and very nurturing. We noted that the extensive Thermal Suite is complimentary to all guests staying at the hotel, not just for those booking a Spa treatment – pity this is not so in most properties. It is always the little extras that leave you with a good feeling after a spa or hotel visit, and Oceo Spa and indeed Seafield Hotel itself scored on that front. Oceo is an oasis of calm, and while many spas claim this, at Oceo we found it to be true. Also, the staff were excellent, very friendly and professional.

DINING AT SEAFIELD GOLF & SPA HOTEL

The well-appointed dining room is situated on the ground floor, just off the large reception area. We were lucky to have a table by the window and enjoyed a leisurely dinner with good food and excellent service. I started with a Kilmore Quay Crab Cake while my friend had Truffled Cooleney Camembert baked in Puff Pastry. Unusual dishes, local and seasonal ingredients and both well put together with balanced flavours. I decided to opt for an Angus Fillet, as it had been so long since I had a good steak, and this was good. Cooked just as I ordered – rare to medium – it had a lovely char-grilled peppery crust. Our other choice was the Sea Bass Fillets which came with Salt Cod Brandade and were delicious. Our waiter was helpful when discussing the extensive wine list and we shared a bottle from Martin Bordugo from Ribera Del Duero 2007 which was one of the better Spanish wines I have tasted in a while.
Breakfast next morning was again in the dining room and included a hot and cold buffet, but we had poached eggs cooked to order and once again took in the view as we were in no hurry to rush away. We read the complimentary newspapers and soaked up the feeling of being in the countryside!
Before leaving the hotel, a walk along the beach was just the job to digest the food before we headed on our respective ways, one to Dublin and the other to Waterford. It was a great meeting point and provided us with a lovely relaxing opportunity to catch up and chill out. Check out Seafield Golf & Spa Hotel
