  • Traditional Irish hospitality.
  • Exceptional dining and new shopping emporium
  • Great Irish music sessions

The Mills Inn is a traditional Inn in every sense of the word. When we talk about putting hospitality back into the growing Irish ‘Hospitality Industry’ the Mills Inn lies at its heart.
The Mills has changed hands a few times over the years, and the present owners have brought the traditional Inn to an even higher level. A new shopping experience has been added with food, crafts, wines and special items for the house and garden. The Mills Inn knows that it is a country Inn – they focus on the food, the bar ambiance and the comfortable rooms.

ACCOMMODATION AT THE MILLS

Antique furniture and excellent power shower were pleasing surprises to a comfortable two bedded room with a double and single bed, fruit bowl and bottled water were also nice additions. It was the vase of fresh flowers from the gardens that added that extra touch. Comfort is paramount in this lovely room, with extra pillows and the softest blankets provided. While we had our own television in the room, down the corridor was a very comfortable lounge area with large television and lots of seating area.

DINNER AT THE MILLS INN

Now when it comes to the food, this is where the Mills Inn really stands out. We had visited on a few occasions, and always found the food to be first-class. Over the last couple of years it has become better and better, and this modest little hotel now offers food that is far more worthy of a restaurant recommendation than many of our top hotels. A separate dining room lifts the restaurant out of the bar, but interestingly the same menu and same prices apply.
An abundance of seafood choices, steaks, duck, lamb and vegetarian options – Head Chef Kevin Purcell has crafted a very intelligent and enticing menu offering something for everybody’s taste. I had a Brochette of Monkfish, Salmon and Tiger Prawns on a bed of wild rice. The fish was succulent and the wholegrain cream sauce was delicious. Other choices were oven baked Organic Salmon; Fresh Hake; a choice of hand-cut 100% Irish Angus Beef Steaks, Surf & Turf, honey roasted Duck, Lamb Cutlets and much more. There are vegetarian options, a dozen starters and as many dessert choices. Added to that is an excellent “Meal in a Hurry” menu which offers Scampi, Stir fry, Fish and Chips, Lasagne Morney, Tortellini, seafood and cold meat platters. There are always fresh daily specials to add to the basic menu. It is not surprising that this is a favourite pit-stop for travelling gourmands!
With a clever wine list and the best brown bread ever, we had an excellent dinner.

MUSIC AT THE MILLS

The great thing about The Mills Inn is that whether you visit on a quieter evening or when the place is buzzing, you are guaranteed a friendly welcome, superb food, very comfortable accommodation and if you are lucky you might stumble across one of the finest traditional music sessions you will ever find. The area around Ballyvourney is rich in Irish language and music and this is as authentically traditional as it gets.
The Mills Inn is at the heart of a vibrant local community, and it provides sustenance and shelter to all who pass through its doors, wherever they come from. The standard is high, the welcome is genuine and the ambiance is very special. We have always had a great visit there.
What’s to do in the area?

The Mills Inn has alongside it a quaint thatched cottage which has been a small craft shop for a number of years. It has now been extended and offers artisan and hand-made food, much of it from their own kitchen. They have gifts and gadgets for the home and garden and all of it is along a tastefully constructed street-like shopping area winding back towards the car-park.

There is also a restored museum which provides a separate function room for dancing, parties and different celebrations. This has been used for weddings on a few occasions, and a separate kitchen is being built to allow for full catering facilities separate to the main kitchen.

The gardens around the Mills Inn are fabulous for walking and sitting in and there is also an ancient castle ruin.

There are several excellent Golf courses within easy driving distance from the Mills Inn – you could stay a week and play a different course each day.

Fishing is also popular and available – check at reception for details.

Driving around the Cork and Kerry mountains provides some of the most spectacular scenery in the country. If you are a biker you will be most welcome here, with safe lock-up for the bike and the most exciting region to ride through.
There is easy access to Killarney, Ring of Kerry and the town of Macroom.
