  • A firm favourite with golfers.
  • Plenty of personality and professionalism.
  • Essentially this hotel ticks all the right boxes.

“A Charming Little Hotel”, is what Killeen House modestly calls itself, situated as it is overlooking the famous lakes in Ireland’s most scenic town. With the multitude of hotels of every grade and literally hundreds of guesthouses in Killarney, it is difficult to find a hotel that really stands out. But Killeen House Hotel does. We were seriously impressed when we visited recently, the food was fabulous, the service was excellent, ambiance both stylish and comfortable, the gardens picturesque and indeed the whole experience was splendid.

But first impressions first. When I drove through the gates I immediately knew this was a special house. The plaque above the door giving the building date of 1838, the bright red and white façade, the easy parking, the lovely gardens –even the cheeky leprechaun at the door! Checking in took about one minute, my bag was brought to a lovely large room with two double beds, and within five minutes I was in the lounge having a nice cup of tea! I chatted to a few fellow guests, many of whom hailed from the States and had come for the golf. I should say had “come back”, as most had visited Killeen House several times, and considered it their “home from home” while enjoying the area’s great golf courses.

Then there is the food. We downed a couple of G & Ts in the bar, whose walls are adorned with thousands of golf balls, perusing great-sounding dishes while Geraldine tempted us further with the evening’s “specials”. Paul O’Gorman is the talented chef here, and his food is sophisticated without being fussy. Rozzers Restaurant is popular with locals as well as guests, the food is so renowned. Suffice to say we ate exceptionally well, and my seafood starter was particularly stunning.

Next morning, while my colleague had an early appointment, I lingered until 10 before I ventured in for a great breakfast. I was not in a hurry to leave this lovely house, every comfort and service was easily available, and there really is a feeling of “home”.

So why is this hotel so special? No doubt the main ingredient in their winning formula lies with proprietors Michael and Geraldine Rosney. With years of experience in the hospitality industry, this engaging couple know how to give the guest the experience they themselves would like to find in a hotel. It is very obvious that they love what they do, their friendliness is genuine and they never get tired, as they enjoy a break every winter and when they re-open in early Spring they are full of enthusiasm for the coming season.

If Michael and Geraldine could bottle and sell their formula to other hotels around the country, they could retire in comfort for the rest of their lives. Lucky for their guests that they don’t!
