  • A charming little hotel
  • Friendly and family run
  • Excellent food and comfort

A friend of mine said recently that she had stayed in The Fairview in Killarney and liked her room so much she wanted to live in it! Good omen, I thought as I drove out to check out a small hotel that has been gaining a big reputation.

Local people are coming in their droves to the restaurant, and tourists are keen to stay in the centre of town in a comfortable guesthouse with all the comforts of a top hotel.
So, I arrived with some expectations.

ACCOMMODATION AT THE FAIRVIEW

I received a very friendly welcome and was delighted with my room. Each is individually appointed, and mine had a large comfortable bed, a plasma screen television, a jacuzzi bath, separate power-shower, a comfortable sitting area with sofa and a lovely view out over the town. One of the most interesting things about this hotel is that each of the rooms is different, and therefore the price structure can accommodate all pockets. The real jewel in their crown is the penthouse, which is very luxurious with views over the Kerry mountains.

Having arrived early, I just settled in to my comfortable room for the afternoon enjoying a mix of some work and some newspaper reading. It was a Sunday after all!

DINING AT THE FAIRVIEW

Dinner was anticipated with some excitement, and when my dining companion arrived we did spend time over the menu. There were nine starter choices and we settle for the Smoked and Marinated Salmon with Prawn Wonton, Mango Salsa and Coriander Crème Fraiche for guest; and my absolutely delicious Chargrilled Tuna with an Asian Salad and Sweet Chilli Dressing. While both were very good and generous, I have to say that my tuna was seared to perfection and was one of the best starters I have ever enjoyed.

For the mains we went all fish again, with monkfish and sea-bass respectively, but could have tried lamb, duck, chicken, beef and several other tempting choices. The chef here is a young lady called Laura, and her cooking is both generous and sophisticated. Yes, the food was good – very good.

LOCATION OF FAIRVIEW

Another thing we liked about this hotel is that while it is the centre of Killarney – Ireland’s tourist capital – it is still quiet enough to go out and enjoy the locality. Just about everything is within walking distance. It is an ideal location while staying in Killarney. We were impressed with The Fairview, it attends to so many important details for the guest. Complementary parking, internet facilities, robes and water, iron and good toiletries; in fact this hotel provides all that you would expect in a larger establishment. Yet it maintains its friendly individual character. We also noted that they have wheelchair facilities throughout. A thoughtful hotel indeed! This is one that bigger hotels could learn a thing or two from!

What’s To Do in the Area?

Killarney is Ireland’s best-known tourist destination and probably the most written-about and sung-about place in the land. The town is colourful with craft shops, galleries, museums, cafes and restaurants. It also has a highly developed range of guided tours – including the traditional horse-drawn jaunting cars.

There is also fishing on the lakes and rivers; there are several great golf-courses; there are ancient heritage sites; there is touring he vast National Park which comprises 27,000 acres; there is rambling on the hills; and there is good company and entertainment in the local pubs and bars.
