  • Super Spa & Fitness Centre
  • Beautifully designed hotel
  • Exceptionally comfortable rooms.

Almost falling asleep during a pampering facial before dinner, and enjoying a powerful hydro-massage in the pool before breakfast – this spa had the balance just right for me! The range of treatments and facilities at the Retreat Spa & Fitness Centre at the Cork Radisson Hotel has made it one of our favourite spa hotels and a great place for a special break.

The day I visited was one of those damp summer days where you only know the seasons by the temperature of the rain! The wet weather continued throughout my stay, and how fortunate I was to be cocooned in such comfort. My room was perfect – in fact I had a suite with a separate area for relaxing and/or working at the desk. Everything I wanted was there. Of course I enjoyed complementary broadband, but I also had a wonderful espresso machine to make sure I kept awake while working! Two televisions, lots of comfortable furniture, plenty of room and a very nifty pull-out ironing board and iron!

I loved my room so much I could have happily moved in and lived there. There was literally everything I could want or need during the stay. The bed was certainly one of the most comfortable I have ever slept in, and the bathroom was perfect. I love having a separate power shower, a large bath, good lighting and plenty of mirrors. The toiletries were good quality and plentiful too.

When it came to the food, I found that again this hotel was getting a good balance in the menu choices. The Island Grill Room menu offers eight different starters, ranging from scallops, chicken confit, quail, seafood gratin, soups, smoked salmon and anti-pasti salad. Main courses also included some interesting dishes along with the old favourites such as wild boar sausages, three good fish courses, tempting vegetarian option and T-bone steak, lamb shank and Ballotine of chicken. When it got to the desserts things got even better! I had the best cheese plate ever which included all the excellent farmhouse cheeses at their optimum ripeness that hail from this part of the country. The wine list was both clever and succinct, three good house reds and whites from around €20, and for the special occasion a Krug Grand Cuvee at €335.00 I spotted some great Australian sparkling wines priced at under €40 which to me offered excellent value. However I opted for a lovely New Zealand Pinot Noir from St Clair in Marlborough which is just perfect for both meat and fish choices.

The Island Grill Room also offer a set menu for €40, which seems excellent value too.

Returning to the same place for breakfast next morning I was delighted with the extensive range of choices on offer. Everything is self-service and the atmosphere is so relaxed with no queuing or waiting. With complementary newspapers at a quiet comfortable table, this was a blissful breakfast indeed!
I had coffee later on that morning with a colleague in the lounge, and noted that this hotel was perfect for business meetings. Conference facilities are state-of-the-art, but really it is the friendliness of the staff and the open and comfortable ambiance as well as the facilities that would make this one of our favourite hotels for business. But with such a super spa and leisure centre, it is excellent for pleasure and leisure too!
What’s to do in the Area?

Cork is a great city for shopping. The main shopping areas are St Patrick’s Street (City Centre) and Mahon Point which is one of the largest shopping centres in Ireland. For details of transport to these areas, the hotel staff will provide a map and directions.

The hotel is in close proximity of Historical Cobh and Kinsale, known as the gourmet capital of Ireland.

West Cork offers some of the best sailing and most picturesque scenery in the world.
Two particular visitor attractions in Cork are Saint Anne’s Church and The Glucksman Gallery.
St. Anne’s Church, Shandon

One of the best known and best loved Churches in Cork was built in 1722 as a chapel of ease to St. Mary's, Shandon, which was located nearby in Mallow Lane, now called Shandon Street. It is believed there was a church on this site at least as early as 1199. The church occupies the site of the old Church of St Mary that was destroyed in the siege of Cork in 1690. A temporary church was built at the foot of Shandon Street for some years until the present church was built. Erected by public subscription it is built primarily of local sandstone with limestone dressing. The tower was added until 1750 and the church gained full parochial status in 1772.

The Glucksman Gallery
The award winning Lewis Glucksman Gallery is based on the main campus of University College Cork. The internationally acclaimed building was designed by O'Donnell and Tuomey architects as a purpose built exhibition space that includes display areas, lecture facilities, a riverside restaurant and gallery shop. www.glucksman.org
