Coolbawn Quay enquiries

- Unique Village Ambiance.
- Peaceful scenic lake-shore location.
- Excellent Spa and facilities.
We had heard about Coolbawn Quay Lakeshore Spa and Marina for some time and were interested to visit as it sounded quite a different hotel experience from the norm. Indeed when we did head over to the north Tipperary resort it did take us some time to find it. This is no doubt part of its appeal, being off the beaten track ensures a very special experience. There is a long drive up to the resort, and although we arrived late and it was quite dark, we could see the lake gleaming before us and the boats bobbing on the water.
The resort is modelled along the lines of a 19th century Irish village, and is made up of a number of cottages built around a village green, complete with water pump! Our suite was opposite this green, and the clubhouse bar and restaurant were just two minutes walk away.
ACCOMMODATION AT COOLBAWN QUAY
Our suite consisted of two double en-suite bedrooms, one upstairs and one downstairs. We also had a living room area with a turf fire, television, CD player and plenty of comfortable furniture. It was very warm and cosy, which we were delighted with as it was a cold and frosty night when we arrived. It was particularly helpful to have the two separate bathrooms, as we were able to avail of one each at the same time. Robes and slippers were also provided in each of the bedrooms. There was also an iron and ironing board, so we were able to settle in and get ourselves ready for dinner.DINING AT COOLBAWN QUAY
The restaurant was very close by, and we went first to the clubhouse bar where we looked through the menu before being shown to our table in the restaurant. Dining is quite unfussy, with a short menu and wine list; however we did find a lovely French Pinot Noir very well priced, and my salmon fillet was perfectly moist and tastefully flavoured with fennel. Our other choice was sirloin steak, but there was also a duck and vegetarian option. Roast pepper salad starter was light and delicate, and the fried goat’s cheese was another good starter. We had our breakfast there the next morning, and while we were the first to arrive as we were off for an early appointment at the spa, we ate well. Fruit and granola were followed by perfectly poached eggs and some excellent brown bread.
THE SPA AT COOLBAWN QUAY
The spa is located in another building, just a short walk from the restaurant and situated directly facing Lough Derg and boarded by forest and fields. It is certainly a great location for a health spa. My colleague went off to spend some time in the Aqua Suite which she had to herself while I enjoyed a facial using the Dr Hauschka organic skincare products. The spa offers a large range of treatments and packages including spa half days and full days and overnight packages. They offer body treatments and wraps and also use the Guinot medicinal plant products in some of their facials. The relaxation Room is at the front of the spa and has an outdoor deck area to enjoy the fresh air on warm days.
THE MARINA AT COOLBAWN QUAY
We were intrigued at the boats on the water and learnt that many people will come to spend time at Coolbawn and berth their boats there. It is a sheltered harbour with a hundred private berths on floating pontoons with shore power and fresh water supply. Berth-holders enjoy all the facilities at the resort which makes it a very unique destination. It is also popular for weddings and there is marquee which can be put up on the village green. While we only spent a short time at Coolbawn, we could see that there are lots of opportunities for people and families here, the location is perfectly lovely and we would certainly return in the summer. For an activity break on the marina, or a relaxing spa break, either is possible due to the private cottage accommodation.
