Savoy Hotel Limerick

- Bright modern city-centre location.
- Very friendly and attentive staff.
- Excellent food.
With a prime location on the site of the old Savoy Theatre and Cinema, the Savoy Hotel, formerly the Marriott, was a perfect choice for our city visit. Marrying the standard that one expects from this renowned international brand we also found a real Irish welcome, a great location and some pretty stunning food. We also had complimentary newspapers, internet access and bottled water. It is surprising how many top hotels charge extra for all these things – but not the Savoy Hotel. We were liking this place already!
ACCOMMODATION AT THE SAVOY
We stayed in a Junior Suite with great views over the city and plenty of space for work and leisure. Our king size bed was super-comfortable, and the bathroom was extra-large with bath and separate power-shower. We had all the usual luxuries you would expect, and then some. We loved the television built into a revolving panel which meant that you could watch the large screen in the sitting area, then turn the panel around and watch it in bed! Quite novel and very clever – no need for multiple televisions in this large suite. We had good views over the city while still having privacy, and we were able to open a window – we hate being forced to make do with hot and cold air from wall-mounted unit!We did leave our room to try out the pool the next morning, we had to work up an appetite for breakfast after the wonderful dinner we had the night before! We were lucky enough to have the place to ourselves and enjoyed the Jacuzzi and steam room as well. I liked the fact that we could go directly to the pool area in our robes, and did not need to go via reception.
DINING AT THE SAVOY
Now this was a real treat. We went down to the Savoy restaurant which is situated on the ground floor just off the reception area, and were shown to a window-side table and it was suggested we try a cocktail. Well, it seemed a good idea, and so we ordered and received two great cocktails which put us in fine form to study the menu. Now we rarely mention money on our reviews, but we will make an exception here and state that the menus offer such exceptional value, that a cocktail is certainly not an extravagance! The Savoy Restaurant was offering an excellent menu with a bottle of very good wine to share for just €38. Mains included Lamb Rump, Monkfish Medallions, Olive Crusted Halibut and Corm Fed Chicken, but we opted for Fillet of Black Angus Beef and the John Dory with Puy Lentils and crispy pancetta. They were gorgeous dishes, cooked and presented to perfection. No scrimping on quality here but rather top-class ingredients which were prepared with sensitivity and style by a talented chef. Since our visit, the Savoy restaurant is temporarily closed for renovations, and dinner is being served at the Kreisler Restaurant upstairs. They are offering a very good value menu for just €30 and includes Sirloin of Beef, Prawn Risotto and Spiced Fillet of Cod among the mains. Starters include such tasty dishes as Castletownbere Crab Cakes and Goats Cheese Fritter and there are also a number of delicious sounding desserts. This is one hotel that is certainly offering great value for good food at a time when budgets are tight and demands are high. Congratulations from the Hotel Reviews Ireland team!HOTEL HISTORY
The Savoy Cinema and Restaurant opened their doors to the public on this very site in 1935 and was hugely popular for years for movies and catering. Right through the War Years there were shows held here for various charities. In 1964 when “A Hard Day’s Night” starring The Beatles was released, there were queues reaching half way up Henry Street to get in. Variety Acts that played at The Savoy included the RTE Symphony Orchestra and The Limerick Choral Operatic Society. Other big names associated with the Theatre were Norman Metclaf, Roy Orbison, Rory Gallagher, Horslips and Thin Lizzy. The Savoy was finally demolished in 1989.With a history embedded in the culture of the city, the Savoy Hotel now enjoys a prime location, a bright and modern ambiance and comes high on our list of top city hotels for luxury and value.
