  • It is located in the heart of the city.
  • Unrivalled comfort and luxury.
  • Extremely friendly staff and beautiful spa.

With November 2009 seeing the twenty year anniversary of the fall of the Wall – there is no better time to visit the fantastic city of Berlin. We were there recently, and were really impressed with all there was to do and see and how easy it was to get around this large city. One thing that also impressed us big time, was the hotel we chose as our base for our three day stay, the Ritz Carlton. Situated in Potsdamer Platz, this super luxury hotel has to be best place to stay in town – we could walk to many of the major attractions, the train stations are across the square and taxis, which are easy and cheap to get, are just outside the door. Of course what better treat after a day of sightseeing than to come back to a lovely room in a great hotel. We have traveled a lot all over the world and both agree that staying in a lovely hotel is the secret of a really good city visit.

ACCOMMODATION AT RITZ CARLTON BERLIN

As with all hotels in this group, the Ritz Carlton in Berlin boasts super luxurious rooms with every amenity the discerning traveler could wish for. The beds were exceptionally comfortable, the bathroom was beautiful and the room was tastefully designed and decorated. We loved our room which in keeping with the whole property was designed so that it seemed to have been there for ever. While it is a relatively new build – obviously given the history of Berlin – the hotel and all the rooms have been cleverly designed to give an antique feel. There is a timeless elegance throughout every room in the hotel. Our room looked out over the Tiergarten – one of Europe’s largest city green spaces – where mature trees and modern joggers and cyclists enjoyed the fresh natural atmosphere. There are a mixture of room styles making up 303 in total, and all enjoy the featherbeds, marble bathroom, plush robes and slippers, touch-screen in-room lighting, safety deposit boxes and many more little extras that make a hotel room special.

DINING AT RITZ CARLTON BERLIN

Staying on the 10th floor, we had access to the Club Lounge which offers food and beverage presentations throughout the day and we had breakfast there each morning and some snacks throughout the day. The Vitrum fine-dining restaurant is quite intimate, just 45 seats, and the food is excellent. We also loved the Brasserie Debrosses, which is a French turn-of-the-19th century brasserie, originally from 1875 offers all day dining. We loved the in-house Boulangerie in the middle of the restaurant which serves the best home made croissants and baguettes. When the weather is good, outside seating gives a great view of the lovely Tiergarten Park. For a great cocktail it has to be the Curtain Club Bar, where we had fantastic cocktails and admired the collection of over 80Champagnes. This is a very stylish place and perfect for an aperitif.
We did eat very well during our stay, but as we walked around much of the city, we did feel we worked it off!

SPECIAL OFFER

To mark the 20th anniversary of the Fall of the Wall, the Ritz-Carlton, built on the site of a portion of The Wall – is offering a “Remember The Wall” package which includes an authentic piece of the graffiti covered concrete barrier. What to do and see
The historic Brandenburg Gate is just ten minutes walk from the hotel and certainly should be the first place to visit to get a feel of this great city. Nearby the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of the Europe, comprising of 2711 concrete blocks is one of the most powerful sites in the city. Designed by Peter Eisenman and completed in 2005 the grid pattern can be walked through from all sides.
The underground Information Centre details the Nazis’ extermination policy between 1933 and 1945. A series of texts and pictures shows the development that led to the Holocaust.
When you pass through the Brandenburg Gate to the Unter den Linden Boulevard o the eastern side you can stroll past some of the city’s most impressive architecture. Here you can see the Bebelplatz, where the Nazis held their book-burning an dthe Staatsopher (State Opera) stands.
There are many museums to visit, particularly the Bode Museum which holds exhibitions of classical artifacts and the Mauermeuseum at Checkpoint Charlie describes the history of the Berlin Wall.
