  • Majestic building in secluded location.
  • Serene Spa and very fine food.
  • Unrivalled views over Croagh Patrick and Clew Bay.

The luxurious sense of space and elegance was the first thing that struck me as I came through the door of Knockranny House. It is quite rare to experience such spaciousness, and this very feeling continued through to the bedrooms, the dining room and the Spa. And the new suites are indeed something to behold.

Even before stepping through the hotel door, I was enthralled by the imposing sight of Croagh Patrick and the beauty of Clew Bay, even though the rain was soft and misty resulting in a rather mystical vision. The vantage point is without doubt the best in Westport.

While the décor was new in places, the whole hotel is tastefully and elegantly designed and blends seamlessly, while fresh flowers cast their delicate perfume throughout the building. I loved the reception area in this Victorian style hotel, and immediately felt myself unwinding after my drive.

Unwinding was the order of the day, as I settled into one of the new suites and then took myself off to the Spa Salveo for two hours of bliss with the Elemis Absolute Spa Ritual. There are a large range of treatments on offer for both women and men in this lovely oasis of calm, which also contains a complete thermal suite. Well restored and refreshed, I relaxed back in my room with the Sunday papers before dinner!

My suite was really incredibly spacious with a super king-size bed, and the huge bathroom had a Jacuzzi bath! This would be a fabulous place to come for a romantic break, but on that occasion I was on my own!

Dinner was another hit. Service is very good, friendly and professional, and menus are interesting. I loved the Asian style sea-bass and enjoyed a really dry Sauvignon to balance it. Looking around the dining room, there was quite a mix of ages and couples and I would think, nationalities. While many Irish people were there, I also spotted American, French and Indian families all enjoying their meal. I suspect that La Fougere Restaurant has quite a reputation in the town of Westport, as there were certainly quite a few local people there too.

I had an exceptionally comfortable night’s sleep, and woke to see that the mist had cleared, cloud had lifted, and Croagh Patrick was clear and sharp in the morning sunshine!

I spent a last few minutes on the steps of this fine hotel admiring that imposing view before heading off down the driveway to the town of Westport. Yes indeed, Knockrany House Hotel offers an all-round excellent experience to the visitor in this lovely corner of Ireland’s West coast.
