The history of St Clerans precedes it, and a visit certainly does not disappoint, judging by our recent visit to this magic country house. In 1953 Movie Director John Huston had moved with his family to live in Ireland. He fell in love with St Clerans and purchased it from the Land Commission. He never regretted the cost of the major restoration work and he declared that he had spent “eighteen glorious years at St. Clerans”. Anjelica Huston was only two years old when the family moved to Ireland.
The Huston family are now very much part of the history of St Clerans. We were looking forward to our visit to this historic country house set in the rugged unspoilt Galway landscape.
Outside it was bright and frosty, inside it was warm and cosy; the food was fabulous, the ambiance welcoming and we were cocooned in a house where we would have happily stayed for a month!
Every room in this house is beautifully appointed, and style and comfort blend quietly throughout. Fabulous flower arrangements, antique furniture, the most comfortable of seating, quirky door-jams, nooks and crannies and details that delight.
The bedrooms – 12 individual suites that are totally charming make this a house where you could bring your very best friends for a fabulous break away together. Bed linen, robes, towels and toiletries are of the highest quality and nothing is spared to ensure complete comfort. And when we did leave our lovely room to venture down to the dining room, we found the food to be very good indeed.
Resident chef, Hisashi Kumagai – known as Kuma – cooks up some exceptional Oriental and European dishes. The wine list is succinct, and we found a rare treat in Woolpunda Shiraz Thompson estate 2001, it was a fine and elegant wine and very well priced. It suited our duck and fish and cheeses perfectly.
With excellent food and wine, this country house is certainly one of the finest. Binoculars and bird species books are strategically placed on windowsills; spare Wellington Boots and umbrellas are sitting near the main door; a grand piano is welcoming; and books and magazines of every hue are available throughout the house. There is a computer room for guests use and complimentary internet access throughout.
St Clerans have succeeded in blending the historic and traditional country house with the modern facilities and comforts that we all like to enjoy. And they do it very well indeed. We commented as we left this house that it was up there with our favourites, and one to which we would gladly return. This is a place to relax in the true meaning of the word, to unwind with long walks and to connect with nature. It is also a place where you could write, compose and connect. St Clerans will offer you the two things we all want when we go away, to be inspired and to be pampered.
