  • Very popular Family Hotel
  • Excellent Leisure Facilities
  • Located in scenic Claremorris in County Mayo.

County Mayo is one of the most scenic and unspoilt regions in Ireland and it is a part of the country that I love to visit for its pure rugged beauty and great amenities. For golf and fishing, walking and hiking, horse-riding and a host of other outdoor pursuits, it is a real haven. It is both a place of peaceful tranquillity and history and also a great family destination. We discovered the McWilliam Park Hotel recently, and with its great leisure centre and beautiful location it is a great choice when stayng in the area whatever the weather.

ACCOMMODATION AT MCWILLIAM PARK

We enjoyed a lovely large room with a spacious sitting area and a good view over the surrounding countryside. Our bathroom had a separate bath and shower area and great lighting and shower pressure. The bed was very comfortable and we particularly liked the fact that we had so much room to move around and also plenty of furniture to unpack and get settled in. We had a working desk area, and comfortable lounge space so it was a room we could have stayed for a week were we planning to explore the area.

LEISURE CENTRE

Because the weather can be so unpredictable in Ireland, the inclusion of a good leisure centre is invaluable to make sure the whole family are well catered for. We could see how popular the pool was, both for children and also for adults to like to take in a swim before breakfast, or even after a day enjoying the outdoors and working up a great appetite for diner. There are also beauty rooms where some pampering treatments can be enjoyed during your stay. We enjoyed a lovely refreshing swim after a long walk around the countryside the afternoon we stayed, and it certainly refreshed and revived us for dinner.

DINING AT MCWILLIAM PARK HOTEL

The hotel is very popular with business people and families from the locality, so there are several dining options on offer. Sunday lunch is a favourite and represents excellent value. We were there mid week and could choose between having something light in Kavanah’s Lounge or opting for a more formal dinner in J.G.’s Restaurant. We went for the latter and found both an extensive A La Carte menu and a multi-choice daily menu which had six starters and desserts and seven main courses to choose from. We settled on the A La Carte and ordered the Chilled Scallop & Spinach Terrine and Oven Baked Stuffed Portobello Mushrooms respectively. This was followed by soup or sorbet choices and eleven different main course choices! These included duck, kangaroo and two vegetarian options as well as several red meat, fish and chicken dishes. Certainly something for every taste here. We decided to chance the Kangaroo (I had eaten it in Australia and loved it), and here it came marinated in spices and lightly fried. My companion decided to sample one of the vegetarian options, Roasted Bell Pepper Shells filled with lightly stir-fried vegetables and glazed with Mozzarella cheese. They were both very tasty and satisfying dishes and it was great to try something different for a change!
The wine list was quite extensive also, and very well priced, wit most bottles in the €20 - €30 bracket. We found a lovely Chianti from Piccini, 2004, and the smooth delicate flavours complimented our dishes very well. We shared a dessert of Caramelised Crème Brulee which was perfectly presented with a lovely crunchy glaze – just as it should be!
We found the service very friendly during our stay and the staff were at all times helpful and courteous. When we were leaving the next morning there was even notice of a road closure and staff were suggesting alternative routes for guests heading in certain directions. We were pleased to find that even though the hotel was busy with a coach tour as well as many individual parties, the staff took the time to look after each individual guest.
On leaving we noticed a sign that said the hotel prides itself on offering a unique Irish experience, and for visitors coming to this lovely corner of Ireland looking for that, the McWilliam Park Hotel provides it.
